Why Choose DSW Services?
The most common question that I have been asked about my business is, why choose DSW services to flush hydrants because most water utility companies already flush hydrants “in house” with certified employees? The answer is straight forward, quality of service, industry knowledge, and the close attention to detail, record keeping, and the opportunity to reduce Non Revenue water and increase sales.
Quality of Service-
I take the necessary steps to ensure all hydrants are operated in a safe manner during the entire flushing stage of the hydrant during opening and closing stage of flowing hydrants. I grease all threaded caps for ease of use during times of need, lubricate operating stem and nut for proper function, and make sure the hydrant has adequate flow and pressure. I also note the visibility of the hydrant and log it down on a spread sheet. I listen for leaks before and after the hydrant is flushed using a leak detection stethophone. When I flow the hydrant I use a diffuser that is also a dechlorinator which takes chlorine out of the water before it enters any lakes, streams, or nearby runoff drains. This is a requirement for most areas by DEP and EPA. I also capture flows in gallons per minute and static and residual pressure per each hydrant to ensure every hydrant has adequate flow for future fire protection use. Flowing hydrants also improves water quality in the distribution system.
Non Revenue Water
Non revenue water is water that is produced but not sold or recorded as sales. This number is captured on a monthly basis and is usually calculated when monthly or quarterly sales figures come back from meter reads or estimates and it is then entered into a math formula. The number is measured against finished water that was produced at the water treatment plant and the outcome leaves a percentage produced vs percentage sold. The left over amount is called non revenue water or water that was produced but not sold. There are many attributes to a high percentage of non revenue water that are associated with leaks, theft of water, backwashing at treatment plants on filters, production use, under registering meters, and flushing of hydrants. It is common practice to account for water being flushed from hydrants during yearly inspections but there is no way to make money that is being flushed during these times because billing yourself as a water company is not ethically possible..

Why you should use DSW Services
DSW Services captures the flow of each hydrant during flushing using a pitot gauge located on the 2 ½” diffuser. I record the start and stop time of the flushing process and use a chart to calculate the amount of water that was used during that period for each hydrant. After each hydrant is completely flushed or on a monthly or quarterly billing cycle, I notify the water company and they bill me accordingly for the water that I used during the flushing process. This reduces non revenue water and increases sales. One question that you need to ask yourself as a person in charge of a distribution system, do I currently make money on water sales for our “in house” flushing program? If the answer is no then please contact me today for your opportunity to change what was once a costly program into a profitable sales increase while decreasing Non Revenue Water by an average of 3 – 5%.
